Titambire; Welcome.
My name is Chaka Chikodzi. My small business, Africville, is the only Indigenous Zimbabwean owned and operated sculpture business in North America. I was born and raised in Zimbabwe, and moved to Canada in 2001. I have been a sculptor since I was thirteen years old, when I learned how to sculpt by watching my older brother.
Since then, I have exhibited throughout South Africa, the United States and Canada. To me, sculpting connects me to my roots, and I find that no matter where I go, I remain inspired by true home - Zimbabwe.
"The most powerful tool we have as Zimbabweans is our culture, which is rich despite our poverty. Sculpture gives Zimbabweans the means to create income, while at the same time offering a way to express the spirit of our existence."
I think it is important for more Zimbabweans to realize the true potential of our culture to aid in healing from our history and to provide answers for the future. The most powerful tool we have as Zimbabweans is our culture, which is rich despite our poverty. The growth of the international market for Zim's sculpture presents the next generation of Zimbabweans great opportunities to develop the industry in a way that provides a sustainable means of income, while at the same time offering a way to express the spirit of our existence. It is my hope that more Zimbabweans will benefit from our cultural success. Thank you for your interest and support.
